Barenaked Ladies at Hamilton Place: Competely Unexpected Ending To Cap Off A Great Show

By Doug Dolbear

The Barenaked Ladies brought their Canadian tour to Hamilton Place, and entertained the full house crowd for nearly two hours with their collection of songs, both old and new.

There was plenty of great music and plenty of comedy as well. Ed Robertson was his usual witty and charming self, never missing a chance to make the audience laugh. Who knew that trying to remember the names of the actors on Mash, while riffing on guitars, could be so funny?

The concert featured classic tunes like Pinch Me, If I had $1,000,000, and perhaps the high point of the evening, Brian Wilson. We also got to hear a good sampling of songs from their latest album, Grinning Streak. Those were entertaining, while at the same time unfamiliar to most of the audience.

At one point Robertson deadpanned, “I hear you out there Hamilton, saying enough with the monster hits, play another song from the new album.” The final number was a strange and wonderful mix of current pop songs including Katy Perry, Lorde, and Miley Cyrus. But what happened next was even more unusual. For the three song encore, Robertson moved to the drums, and the band went into hard rock mode, led by the completely manic Tyler Stewart. Their rendition of “Whole Lotta Love” left us feeling like we had just seen a Led Zeppelin Tribute band. Leave it to these guys to finish with something completely unexpected.
