The Stowaway Has Got It Right For Live Music on James Street North

The sight of this patio made my day. Knowing how much hassle and expense a Hamilton business has to go through to get permission from the City to add a patio, I'm especially impressed by the Stoway Pub and Eatery.

The new venue is obviously committed to doing things right the first time. Here are a few simple observations which surprised and impressed me. The free board games and retro video games are a nice perk. The tables and decor are comfortable and inviting.

The front of the Stowaway has about six tables and a side area with some soft seats. Moving toward the back you turn the corner and it feels like you're walking into a different space, which is centered around a corner stage, with a decent bar opposite and a half-dozen more tables. A perfect spot for an intimate live music show. Old vinyl album covers and 45s make up the decor.

Most impressive is the owner's commitment to scheduling live music, to creating a quality mix of a variety of music, and to getting the word out. Already the Twitter feed is over 450 tweets with 387 followers.

Up-and-coming musicians who are new to the scene, and definitely worth seeing and hearing, have been given a regular spot. Established artists also can be found on the schedule, which provides lots of flexibility for special guests. The small size of the Stowaway means that all live music will necessarily have a more acoustic flavour. A rock band in here would blow your ears out!

The serving staff are super friendly and prompt, and the food (I had the chicken club sandwich - nice, with a touch of heat) is reasonably priced. Specials include discounts on beer. No one's going to argue with that!
