International Jazz Day: What's Your Favourite Jazz Quote?

Tuesday April 30th was International Jazz Day. In commemoration of the event, some of our local musicians shared their favourite jazz quotes!

The piano ain't got no wrong notes! — Thelonious Monk (submitted by Steel City Jazz Fest)

Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. — Charlie Parker (submitted by Alan Newhouse)

Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art. — Charlie Parker (submitted by Troy Harmer)

Some days you get up and put the horn to your chops and it sounds pretty good and you win. Some days you try and nothing works and the horn wins. This goes on and on and then you die and the horn wins. — Dizzy Gillespie, quoted in Dread Diary. (submitted by  Brad Cheeseman)

Talking about music is like dancing about architecture. not that you shouldn't do either! — (submitted by Sam Klass)

Once Is A Mistake, Twice Is Jazz — (submitted by Sam Klass)

Jazz washes away the dust of every day life. — Art Blakey (submitted by Angelo Noto Campanella)

The word ‘jazz’ to me only means ‘I dare you.’ — Wayne Shorter (submitted by Kristen Prince)

Man, if you have to ask what it is, you'll never know. — Louis Armstrong, when asked "What is Jazz?" (submitted by Shari Dunn)

As a  musician who plays jazz-inflected songs, I always enjoyed this possibly apocryphal anecdote about Louis Armstrong responding to the Queen of England when she asked him some forgotten question.  Wanting to appear sophisticated, he responded,

One never knows,
do one?

Thanks Louis! — (submitted by P i p)

Thanks to the many readers who shared their quotes! - GB
